&lt;p&gt;Much of this is going to sound like marketing how-to&amp;#8217;s, but if you truly put your customer at the center of everything you do, then the distinction between &amp;#8220;marketing&amp;#8221; and &amp;#8220;business&amp;#8221; pretty much disappears.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;My view: marketing should be a profit center, not a cost center&lt;/strong&gt; &amp;#8212; and pulling that off requires an intellectual discipline more akin to engineering than you might expect.&lt;/p&gt;
